Growth is not becoming more of what you already are.
It is becoming different through consequence.

We often picture growth as addition. More strength. More skill. More reach. A larger version of the same thing moving in the same direction. But living things do not only grow by adding. They grow because what they meet changes them.

Consequence is not a reward or a punishment. It is what an encounter leaves behind. A root bends around stone. Skin changes where it meets friction. Trust changes how close two people can stand. Something happens, and afterward the next moment meets a different shape than the one that entered.

Not every consequence is kind, and becoming different is not always the same as becoming better. A wound can shape a life. So can being loved at the right moment. Growth does not promise improvement. It names the deeper fact that contact can become part of us, and that what becomes part of us changes how the world can reach us again.

I do not think we grow by deciding exactly who we will become. Some of what changes us is chosen. Much of it is not. We meet, repeat, resist, recover, and return, and consequence does the slower work. One day we respond differently, carry something farther, or notice that an old world no longer fits. The change has already entered us.

Growth is what happens when consequence enters continuity. What happened is not discarded, and it is not made final. It becomes part of our shape, and our shape continues.

Let what happens change you without becoming all you are.
